People with Visual Intelligence are imaginative and creative in their own ways. They are well aware of their surroundings and are good at forming and recalling imagery pictures in the memory. They have a great sense of directions and mapping the routes. They learn best through drawings and visual aids.

Leonardo da Vinci, is one amongst the famous personalities with a high degree of Visual-Spatial Intelligence. Such people possess the skill to imagine the world accurately, modify their surroundings based upon their observations, and recreate the aspect of their visual experiences. People with high-spatial intelligence are good at visualising images, faces and fine details along with the dynamism of multiple angles.

Atmiya Vidya Mandir conducted a competition on 30th July 2016, to assess and enhance the intelligence of the students in the sphere of visual-spatial.

It was held grade-wise as described below:

Grades 1 to 3- Colouring decorating and finding hidden things from the given picture

Round 1: It was a wonderful sight to see little kids expressing ideas in their own ways. Two students from each house for each grade formed a group of four participants. They decorated a birthday card, birthday crown and birthday cap with different colourful pearls, stickers and shiny and attractive tiny things. Their tiny hands and eyes coordinated well and demonstrated their visual intelligence.

Round 2: In the second round, students were given a puzzled picture wherein they had to find and colour the hidden things like fruits, objects and alphabets. This competition encouraged the imaginative and innovative skills along with developing the colour sense among the kids. Students were genuinely excited during the competition, which also gave them great contentment and happiness.

Grade 4- Map Activity

This competition tested students’ presentation, accuracy and identification skills. The students marked landforms on the map of India with different pulses given to them. It was a bit challenging to stick the pulses in the appropriate space, but students showed authentic awareness and stability in this task. Their coordination surpassed their age limit.

Grades 5 and 6- Exploring India with Chhota Bheem

Students located the states of India through the given clues, and pasted picture of staple food of the respective state. The skills of sequencing and identification were tested throughout the competition. This was a kind of play-way competition wherein they had to be meticulous in all the given tasks. They showed great enthusiasm in overcoming the given challenges. The outcome of the competition due to systematic work and disciplined follow up amazed the viewers as it was beyond the expectations of teachers.

Grades 7 and 8- Architectural Design

Architectural Design is one more tool to inspire the students to think creatively as well as critically. Students were grouped house-wise to form a team of four, consisting two from each grade. They were expected to design a bungalow and its interior, in such a way, that it was visually attractive, spatially comfortable and architecturally well-designed. A chart paper with the fixed design of parking, cut-outs of furniture, cut-outs of walls, measurements for the rooms and pathways were provided to the students.

Students not only participated actively and enthusiastically but also designed the interior creatively. All the four outcomes, if not completely, almost fulfilled the required three criteria. As a result, the desired exercise of visualization of space and things were successfully accomplished.

Grade 9 and 10- Treasure Hunt

Finding any hidden object or a clue is, indeed, the most exciting and energetic activity for any student. It sharpens their thinking ability. In order to enhance this skill, Treasure Hunt competition was organised. It proved as a platform where they learnt the importance of working together and being receptive towards their team members, if one wants to win. It was a competition of vocabulary and mind power, breaking each and every single word to understand the hidden meaning of it.

The competition took place entirely within the school’s campus. Cool drizzling rain empowered students to run around to find the hidden clues. In the midst of the competition, it was fun to see some of the students left alone from the team searching their own team members. Sometimes, students stood right beside the clue point and yet wondered where it would be! Even teachers from the staffroom left their work and were found excited to see participants in their thoughtful and confused condition and tried helping them out in different ways.

Throughout the activity students had to rack their brains, co-relate the clues and most importantly, work in a team and discuss their point of view to reach the desired destination. This competition also gave an opportunity to a few students to forget their past clashes and differences and motivated them to work together as a team.

Thus, the competition gave a new outlook to the students and ended with great contentment and joy.
